Pinocchio
Colourful lights were nearly sparkling in the darkness of the club. The music in the background was familiar but he couldn't quite place it. He hasn't been visiting for some time now. It was hard to say whether something changed. There was a lot of new faces, but in the shadows he noticed the older members. He nodded to some of them when they looked straight at him. Their faces were unreadable but he knew that inside they are burning with questions and curiosity. One day the youngster will understand and look at him the same way but right now they just weren't able to understand it. They were too young. Adam asked the barman for a shot of vodka and drunk it. That got him few interested looks from the youngsters. From the wrong reasons of course but still. If Adam was to be totally honest with himself he would admit he loved the attention he was getting but since honesty wasn't one of his best traits he never admitted such thing. He smiled coldly at the most cheeky of the youngster who actually dared to come so close to him that he could easily touch his face with his hand. The youngster ignored the look the barkeeper gave him and sat even closer. Adam could feel the coldness of the youngsters skin. So very young
-James...-started the barkeeper with a warning tone while looking apologizing at Adam.
-Leave him be, Umal. I can use some company and...well. We will see, won't we, young one? - Adam smiled the youngster who didn't look so sure of himself anymore. Adam noticed the way the young one looked on the sides. Looking for help obviously but no one seemed eager to help him out.
-So...James, is it?- asked Adam
-Yes. And you are?
-Adam.
-I've never seen you here before. - added the boy as if trying to explain himself.
-How old are you, James?
-Err, a year.
-You are very young, indeed. Do you know that up to three years your blood is still human? Afterward it changes completely. -The boy looked terrified. He must have guessed who is he playing with and what is the threat.
-Um...I didn't know that.
-Not many knows. So where's your master?
-Master?- Adam sighted. Every time he came here the word changed.
-Your creator, boy.
-He's busy. It's Edgar.- he used this name like a shield. Adam remembered Edgar.
-I could have guessed. He likes boys like you. Brave, beautiful and stupid. Reckless.- the young vampire didn't say anything.
-So how is Edgar? I suppose Belinda is still with him?
-Belinda? I don't know her.
-Him. As I said he always likes them stupid and brave. Must have gotten himself killed. He was like a butterfly...
-A butterfly? Was he also...- James didn't finish.
-Oh, yes. Edgar made him too. Not so long ago. But he doesn't mind sharing, you see. That's the good thing about Edgar.- Adam lifted his hand and touched the face of the boy. The boy couldn't help it when his head jerked and eyes fogged for few seconds. When he finally got back together he looked shocked.
-What...
-Adam. - Adam turned his head when heard his name. It was Edgar. There was annoyance in his eyes. Actually Edgar hated sharing but was afraid of Adam enough to never say no.
-Oh. Edgar. How are you?
-Fine. Haven't seen you in while.
-Busy, but I always come back here.
-Yes. You do. I see, you have already met my James.
-Charming, little boy. Very brave, and so stupid. You know how to choose them. I will take him, if you don't mind of course.
-Actually, I thought I could find you someone more appropriate. There's a boy...he doesn't belong to nobody.- Even though Adam didn't plan on being interested the fact of boy belonging to no one was interesting.
-What do you mean by nobody?
-His mentor was killed.
-Oh- All the interest Adam had for the unknown boy was gone now. He looked with a smile at James again who was listening very carefully. -I think I'd rather stay with the known, Edgar. You know me, I'll wait for him after I'll finish with the Elders.
-You will like him, Adam. He's not...the usual kind. He's different. I kept him safe especially for you.- Adam snorted and shook his head.
-Edgar.
-James! Bring Patrick. Quickly!- the vampire boy disappeared and Adam bowed his eyebrows.
-A special talent? So where's Belinda?
-Gone.
-So, how long was it? Five years?
-Fifteen. Why did you came back?
-Careful, now Edgar. Don't...go there.- Adam's voice changed and became dangerous. Edgar took a step back as fear he crossed his face. The Elders didn't feel safe around Adam, and there were stories of massacres after angering him.
-So, how did Belinda died? He could have been a good vampire one day. He had the potential...imagination...entertain me, Edgar and tell me how he died. Were you there? Did you look? Or maybe you were too careless?
-Neither. He fall in love and after his lover was gone he lost his will. Killed himself. As you said he had imagination and loved grant gestures.
-I must have been painful for you, Edgar. How long ago did it happen?
-Fifteen years.
-Oh, is James your first since then?
-Yes.
-How...fortunate, isn't it? Do you think he will fall too?
-Don't do it. He's not strong enough to face you.
-He did face me. Moreover, he challenged me. But there's no big waste here. He would get himself killed anyway. It's in him. How old was he when you changed him? Sixteen?
-Fourteen.
-See, it was there all along. What happened? Hit by a car? Overdose? Knives fight?
-Shooting in the bank. He wasn't even inside. The bullet got sidetracked and hit him.- Adam laughed. Bad luck indeed. The boy had a mark of fate, and she hates to wait.
-The quicker he's going to get killed the better for him.
-He made it until now.
-Maybe his date was back on the day of shooting?
-He had it before he was even born.
-Don't tell me you actually fall for a little brat?
-It's not your business. Leave him...please.
-...I can't, Edgar. He challenged me.
-...then don't hurt him. Humiliate him, bed him but without the powers.
-There are moments that I won't be able to control them, Edgar...who is the other boy?
-A vampire, maybe two weeks old, he's unique. His creator was destroyed by the Hunters. And they left him unharmed. And he's beautiful.
-Beautiful? Then why no one took him under wings?
-I did, but...he's different. You will see.
-Two weeks old? Barely an infant.
-But he's powerful. We think he was one of Them.
-Impossible.
-You will see, Adam.
-He's better be good. If he is, I'll just give few pushes to your little gem, but otherwise...Elders don't like to wait.
-Since when you care what the Elders say?
-Edgar. I remember you as a young one. They remember me as one too.
-Do they? They say you aren't a real vampire...not full blooded one.
-Do they now? That's the bad side of being gone. I never hear any gossips. So what do they say about me?- Adam seemed to be amused, but his dark eyes were cold. Edgar was getting annoyed with James. Why is it taking him so long?
-Many things. You are like a legend in here. That you were born a vampire from human parents. That your mother was changed into vampire when pregnant. That your father was a vampire and your mother human and the other way around too. Everyone thinks something different.
-And what exactly do you think, Edgar?
-I don't.
-So Marcie never told you about me?
-Of course she did. She told me to leave you alone because you are dangerous and to never question you.
-Dear Marcie. I always liked her. Where is she?
-I don't know. We think she went to sleep.
-We?
-Her children...-Edgar nearly shouted from joy when James finally showed up again with the other boy. Adam changed the word in his mind quickly to a man. He must have been no younger than twenty-five when changed. And he wasn't beautiful. He was handsome in that manly type. Not all that many male vampires were handsome. They were mostly beautiful. Delicate.
-That's Patrick. Patrick this is Adam. A friend.- The youngest of vampires looked straight at Adam and the oldest smiled satisfied. They was no fear but no curiosity either. Just intelligence.
-Nice to meet you, Patrick.- Adam said warmly. The young man took a step back and then in his eyes was fear. And hatred. Interesting.
-Hanadan. The cursed one.- Young vampire nearly spitted at him.
-You were right, Edgar. He's...different.- but you just have no idea how different, thought the rest Adam. Then he looked at the other vampire. The cheeky one, whatever his name was.
-I take it you want to trade then?- asked Edgar and two pairs of eyes of youngsters stabbed him like daggers.
-Of course. Come here, young one...-he cheeky of the vampires took a step forward and before anyone in the club could as much as stood up Adam throw his fist into the other ones' chest. Slowly he eased down and took out the heart of a vampire. He heard a scream made by James and his mentor, Edgar.
-Remember how I told you that your blood is still very human, young one? Until you are going to get rid of it you are a burning flag in the darkness of night. If ever a Hunter stepped into this town, you would be the first killed. Even if they were to enter this place now, the first to be gone will be you. Do you know why, young one?
-N...nno- choked the vampire.
-There's a mark in your blood, young one. A mark that calls all deadly things to you to harm you. You weren't supposed to be born, you see. But since you have been born you became a feed. For anything desperate enough to want to feed on you. You were lucky to have Edgar protecting you, I guess you still are. Don't worry, it won't hurt any much longer. Do you feel coldness?
-Yes.
-Soon. Edgar, don't cry. I'm giving you a gift and you call me every curse you know.- For a second Adam looked at Patrick. The young vampire was taken aback. Disgusted. No wonder Hunters never touched him. No wonder his creator gave his life to protect him. Adam knew very well what kind of monster the young vampire was himself. And how to use him for his own ends.
-It's nearly over...Edgar, come here- just now Adam realised that he had been holding the other vampire with his powers. Slowly he realised him. Edgar came on his knees weeping.
-Stand up, Edgar. You are giving me something dearer that my proposed price so I'm giving you extra. Look at him. There's nearly no human blood left in him. You left too much of it. Too afraid of losing him. But if you take it all out, if you feed him the vampire flesh for few days he will be ok. He'll be dead for the fate. He won't be fully a vampire, he'll be worse than non-living living. But he'll be yours and safe. And that's what you want, isn't it?- Edgar nodded. Adam gave him the heart of the boy the other man loved.
-Press it, so the last drop will be gone....there, now feed him, not just your blood, Edgar, your flesh too...you will have to hunt for vampires...and feed them to him. He will be strong.- he whispered to Edgar and took the hand of his trophy. Patrick struggled his hand free.
-Don't touch me.- he hissed and Adam laughed.
-You belong to me, Patrick...or maybe Patriccio? Or Pinocchio?
-Don't you dare!- Adam took his arm and nearly wrestled him out of the club. Outside it was raining.
-So you crawled back from that dirty hole?
-I should have known that you are going to be a vampire...how typical, the lowliest creatures on Earth and there you are.- Young vampire spat to the amusement of Adam.
-Oh, don't forget the fact that I never said I'm not a vampire. You assumed it because I changed. I was growing up and no vampire can do it. You never said you thought me to be one...so how did THAT happen? If a remember correctly you hated being a vampire and after your partial success in the experiment to change you back you went back to people. When you discovered that your experiment wasn't perfect you crawled into that terrible place and disappeared, and now...after so many years, you are here, a two weeks old vampire who is truly probably older than the Eldest in this place- Adam laughed again and Patrick cursed.
-He didn't tell me he was a vampire. He was good, I never even suspected. I thought him to be one of Them, and when he changed me...I thought I'm going to kill him....honestly, two hundred years of experimenting to be a human that little, petty, barely seventy years old vampire changed me!
-Hunters didn't harm you though.
-Not thanks to him, the fucker would give me to them on the golden plate if that would help him. They left me for the same reason they never hunted you.
-Not fully a vampire not fully a human, huh?
-Don't even remind me.
-So how did you ended up with Edgar? I like him, but he's not your type really, Pinocchio.
-For gods' sake don't call me that! I hate it.
-You used to like it.
-Three hundred years ago!
-Pinocchio, I have to say I missed you.
-Let's stay at Patrick and Adam, ok?
-Patrick? Why not Patricio?
-Then how about we won't talk at all. I have to go to Italy. That stupid convent is so dumb. No matter how many I cursed and insulted they still didn't throw me out.
-Well, good for me. Why Italy?
-I hope I still have some of my notes there.
-So, you want to be human again?
-You don't understand. You've never been truly either. It's like a torture....that what you did with that kid there is another type of torture, you changed him into some kind of zombie! Who knows what! It's forbidden!- Adam looked at the man before him. The black hair and brown eyes, tanned skin. He was so handsome, a real Italian man, solid and serious. Oh, how he missed him. Adam actually felt like a child. When they met for the first time, Adam was only seven, but growing quicker than normal kids he had look and mentality of a teenager. Patrick, or rather Patricio was living on the other side of the forest. They befriended, Patricio never asked what kind of creature Adam is, and the boy himself knew very well who is the man of cold eyes and icy touch. When Adam was fourteen he stopped changing and Patricio never commented on that either. He accepted him, the way he accepted the humans, deer and other vampires. They were friends and with time they became lovers. And then Patricio finished his huge experiment and disappeared after just two weeks as a human. He left him without any explanation or goodbye. It hurt for some time but then it faded an finally was forgotten.
-The Elders never threw you from the convent because they thought you are or at least were one of Them. They were fascinated by those insults, your lack of fear and familiarity of life as a vampire. If you told them that you were a vampire once I think they would let you go.
-Or they would stop me and they would take the secret from me. Never.
-Do you think you could make me into a human?
-No. You...you've never belonged to neither of those categories. You are a rare hybrid. And that's all. No cure for that.
-Neither a human nor a vampire while at the same time both of them.
-How are your parents?
-They are fine. They live in the States now with all of their family.
-Their? It's your family as well. You used to worship them.
-I grew up. I'm not one of them and I don't even feel that way anymore. In here, I'm just a different, dangerous vampire. Between people I'm a weird man. But at least I can pretend I'm one of them.
-You don't have to. You love it.- Adam laughed again at the crude comment.
-Maybe I do.
-I don't have time to play with you, Adam- darkly whispered Patrick feeling invisible hands in his head.
-I missed you, we have all time we may ever want, starting now...-Patrick cursed but put no shield around himself so Adam could enter his mind without any problems. This annoyed the other vampire, he enjoyed the resistance so he gave in, taking away the hands and letting Patrick go.
-Italy? Where exactly?
-Home. Let's go home.
